At school I was excited by developments like the Human Genome Project and chose Genetics for my first degree. I was lucky to then land a student position with Cancer Research UK and enjoyed being part of their research team, while I worked towards my PhD. I enjoyed lab work and presenting at scientific conferences, but found my true passion was in explaining our work to the multitude of volunteers from charity shops and offices who visited our laboratories.
From a scientific start, I then moved into the technical arm of marketing for a well-known mobile phone network. Again, my favourite part of the role was communication and finding ways to explain technical information to non-technical teams.
After having my own children, I had the opportunity to volunteer in their schools and start to explore my nagging desire to get into teaching. I worked as a Learning Support Assistant for many years and was incredibly excited to start my formal teacher training in 2018.
It’s been wonderful to join the friendly and welcoming community at Great Kingshill C of E Combined School. Every day is different, full of fun, and the children are truly inspiring. Helping children reach their potential and feed their curiosity for life, makes teaching a very special career and one I am delighted to be pursuing.
