Great Kingshill CE Combined School
Mathematics Overview
The teaching of mathematics, we aim to enable pupils to develop clear skills in fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The teaching of mathematics is flexible and underpinned through the work of the Whiterose Maths Hub. Pupils are taught in mixed ability classes and their learning follows the teaching pathways outlined through the Maths hub, supported by resources from Maths No Problem.
The overviews we used a planned to support the teaching of mastery. They are aligned to the national curriculum.
Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract
We believe that all children, when introduced to a new concept, should have the opportunity to build competency by taking this approach.
Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.
Pictorial – alongside this child should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems.
Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods.
