PE

VISION

At Great Kingshill, we are committed to providing a high-quality, inclusive Physical Education curriculum that inspires all children to enjoy being active and develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.

INTENT

We believe every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity on a regular basis and become more physically confident and competent. As a result of all of the sporting opportunities and physical activity that we offer throughout school, children develop a love and passion for sport and continue this into their later lives.

Children are provided with at least 2 hours of fun, exciting and active PE lessons every week and to keep the children healthy and active every day with at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, while also educating them on a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle. A high-quality PE curriculum will develop physical literacy and allow pupils to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such fair play and respect. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as decision-making, and social skills such as teamwork and communication.

Through high-quality teaching, staff promote participation, progress and performance in PE.  We recognise the impact that the provision of a high-quality PE and school sport curriculum has on the whole school and that it can lead to whole school improvements; developing pupil’s personal qualities through PE can affect their attitudes towards school and learning.

IMPLEMENTATION

We follow the PE Passport scheme, which provides a broad and balanced curriculum covering a wide range of sports, physical activities and fundamental movement skills. Through carefully planned lessons, pupils develop their physical competence, confidence, teamwork, resilience and understanding of healthy lifestyles.

Inclusion is at the heart of our PE provision. We ensure that every child can participate, achieve and experience success regardless of their ability or sporting background. This ethos is reflected in all aspects of school sport, including our annual Sports Day. Rather than focusing on individual events, every child takes part in every activity station, earning points for their house team and contributing to a shared sense of achievement, teamwork and school spirit.

Beyond curriculum PE, we offer a variety of extra-curricular sports clubs, providing pupils with opportunities to further develop their skills, try new activities and enjoy being active with their peers. These are both staff-run clubs, and external coach-led.

We are proud members of the Holmer Green Sports Partnership. Through this partnership, our pupils participate in a range of sports festivals and events alongside other local primary schools. These experiences promote fair play, sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy competition, while encouraging children to represent the school with pride and respect.

We also create opportunities for children to become sporting leaders during their time at GKCS. When they reach KS2, children can lead sporting activities, organise games and events and learn to lead by example. By emphasising leadership, children learn the importance of communication, organisation, team work, resilience, perseverance and a respect for rules.

IMPACT

Our aim is for every child to leave our school with the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

When PE and school sport provision is of a high quality, all pupils will, to the best of their abilities, develop and demonstrate the following personal qualities:

  • A strong desire to learn and make progress;
  • High levels of dedication, attendance and involvement in PE and school sport;
  • An understanding of how an individual’s behaviour can impact a group and knowledge of how to work together towards a common goal;
  • High levels of commitment to PE and school sport;
  • Good levels of positive behaviour such as politeness, fair play and helpfulness.
  • An awareness of the physical and mental benefits of keeping ourselves fit and healthy.
